Instead of the peace that everyone hoped for the end of WWII
brought about a new rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Greenbrier played an important part of the
Cold War, just west of Washington D.C. Those who knew about the construction of the 112,000 square foot bunker exhibited the
pride and patriotism characteristics of West Virginia by never revealing the federal government plans for the resort. During
the Cold War there were no deaths.
The the Cold war began to heat up in the late 1950's as the world turned its attention
to a small area of southeast Asia. The French colony of Vietnam dominated international affairs for 15 years West Virginia
had the largest number of deaths per 100,000 state in the nation.
